This single was released because our friend Simon London was intent on getting us on the National Lottery show one more time before he left. Unfortunately, we had been promoting Where is the one as our next single. However, Where is the one was felt to be too frightening for the Lottery, unlike Simon's favourite, Waiting for this. We decided to turn Where is the one into a fan-thanking giveaway and make Waiting for this the new single.

Unfortunately, the slot we were offered was 5 December 1998, at the height of the Christmas period. Because of the volume of real artists releasing records in that week, no shops wanted to take the record. The release date was shifted to early 1999, with predictable results.

A small anecdote which summed up the experience: In the week of release, ARC got a call from the then-hippest music show on TV, TFI Friday saying that they were 'doing a feature' on some singles that week, and they wanted to include ours. 'Great!' we thought 'this kind of exposure could really turn the tide!', and we tuned in eagerly that Friday.

The feature proved to be all about the worst-selling singles of the week. The manager of the Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street was being asked how many of each record they had sold that week. Waiting for this by RUTH had sold 12 copies. The thrust of the piece was that TFI was so powerful that it could single-handedly reverse the fortunes of these acts, and that viewers should rush out the following day and buy millions of copies. They didn't.
